Energy Healing
Energy healing, (or energy medicine), is of one of the five domains of the “complementary and alternative medicine” identified by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the United States.
These methods vary widely in philosophy, technique, and origin. “Energy medicine” is divided into two general categories by The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, “putative” and “veritable” energy therapies. Some claims of those energy medicine devices are known to be fraudulent, creating law enforcement action in the U.S.
“Energy Healing” or “Energy Medicine” has been use since the founding for the non-profit International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine in the 80’s. Books called “Energy Medicine” were used as a guide for practitioners and surveying existing research evidence. Energy healing and medicine was supposed to re-balance and restore the body’s energy field health.
Different types of “Veritable Energy Medicine” include magnet therapy and light therapy, also known as electromagnetic therapy. Electromagnetic radiation therapy is not accounted “electromagnetic therapy” in the terms of complementary medicine. The use of sound waves in therapy is known as cymatic therapy.
Other types of “Energy healing” include acupuncture, qi gong, reiki, spiritual healing, and related concepts including the notion of Qi, similar to Prana in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as well as homeopathy, therapeutic touch, distant healing and other related concepts.
Alternative therapies like electromagnetic therapy still make claims that are not supported by evidence. Many claims are made on poorly understood concepts of the forms and many times associated with religious or spiritual ideas that later become exploited. Electricity and magnetism were seen as strange and impossible in the early 1800’s and radio-active materials were dangerous in the 1900’s.
Energy healing has been thought of as just a placebo effect by skeptics. They define this as a person’s beliefs and hopes about a treatment, combined with their suggestibility, may have a significant effect. Neurochemistry can be affected by the sensory experience. The body’s neurochemical system affects and is affected by other biochemical systems, including the hormonal and immune systems. Thus, it is consistent with current knowledge that a person’s hopeful attitude and beliefs may be very important to their physical well-being and recovery from injury or illness. A person who is sick usually believes that they are in pain. , this is when role-play is suggested in this theory. Role-playing is not the same as faking or malingering, the behavior of sick or injured persons is socially and culturally based to some extent. The placebo effect is known to be changed behavior that is affected by the person's belief in a treatment. A changed behavior includes changes in attitude, what one says and acts. It may also affect one’s body chemistry.
Many claims for positive outcomes after energy therapy has been known to known as the placebo effect or cognitive dissonance. There are countless devices sold across the United States that claim energy healing powers and medicine. Many have a lack of regulation and are widespread in false or unproven marketing claims. Devices like the QXCI or EPFX and the PAP-IMI were banned by the US and Canada.
