David By Michelangelo - The History Behind The Statue
Next time you are visiting Florence, why not visit the Galleria dell' Accademia, because it is here you will find one of the most talked about statues in the world. That statue, of course is statue of David by Michelangelo.
Now, it should be remarked that you aren't supposed to photograph the sculptures in the Accademia Gallery on account of “copyright Laws” so the purchasing of postcards and photos from the gift shops is encouraged. Yet, in Rome, these same “copyright Laws” are not enforced; you are simply not allowed to use flash cameras around the artwork. As a side note, I ought to mention that niether Papi Silvio or Rome send Florence the required funding for the maintenance, let alone restoration, of the monumental churches and artwork, so paying a few euro for a postcard is a small price for the upkeep of these treasures.
The statue of David by Michelangelo did not always grace the floor of the Galleria dell' Accademia; originally it was displayed at the Piazza della Signoria. In 1873 it was wisely taken out and replaced by a replica, which even though not the original, remains an incredible piece of art and truly worth your time to view. You also have no “copyright” restriction because it’s a replica so it’s possible to take as many pictures as you like.
The Checked History Of David By Michelangelo
The famous King David, from the bibles Old Testament, might or might not have been a distant ancestor of Jesus Christ (dependant upon your own beliefs and interpretations) but his beginnings and legendary quest to ultimate greatness were far from being easy. Much the same is the story and history of the great Michelangelo's Masterpiece, David.
From Simple Beginnings There Came A King
David, it should be pointed out was chiselled out of a single block of marble and stands at 5.17 meters or 17 ft . tall making the original block of marble huge and very expensive. This large slab of rock originated from a quarry in Tuscany (Carrara), close to 40 years prior to Michelangelo was even born.
An assisitant of Donatello, Agostino di Duccio, was the first to be given the commission and the block of marble. Di Duccio, to his credit, did perceive his own statue of David in the blank marble block, but this David never became a reality. Two years latter di Duccio abandoned the sculpture declaring the marble as being far too challenging and time consuming to work with.
Unveiling David By Michelangelo
The semi-completed sculture, which was one day destined for greatness, sat gathering dust until the year 1474. An artist by the name of Antonio Rossellino was the next in line to cut his marks in the great stone. It seems as though the stone was destined for only one master to complete and after only a couple of months, Rossellino stopped work on the sculpture laying blame on the marble's intractability among other things.
By this time, the once great marble block had been cut and chiseled based on the visions of previous artists. Many renowned artists of the time considered the stone to be spoiled and ruined Destined to be broken up and used as smaller marble pieces.
Finally, when all hope seemed to be gone, in 1501 this forgotten peice of carrara marble was assigned to a twenty six years old assistant sculptor. This assistant sculptor went by the name of Michelangelo. Through his eyes, Michelangelo could see what the stone should be rather than what the artist desired it to be. In a broad proclamation he confidently declared that he would finish the sculpture without drastically cutting it down, altering or adding new pieces to it.
Michelangelo's David Was Born
Michelangelo worked on the marble for only 3 years before deeming one of the world's great masterpieces as being complete. From it's staggered beginnings, the statue of David by Michelangelo was born. Contempories of the time were so impressed that they gave David a prominant place of high honor standing at the to the Palazzo Vecchio.
For close to 350 years, David proudly stood in that place of honor amid other great statues on full display to the public and at the mercy of the elements. In 1873 the statue was shifted to the Accademia Gallery in Florence where it stands today attracting multitudes visitors’ a year.
