A Pensioner Purportedly Robbed Of His Nest Egg By A Man Posing As A Garda Has Been Inundated By Donations And Offers Of Help.
A Pensioner reportedly robbed of his life savings by a person posing as a garda has been snowed under with donations and offers of help.
The 70-year-old had his life savings of 28,000 thieved at his Cork home last week.
And while gardai have since recovered an important sum of money -- almost nineteen thousand -- it is still confusing if this is hooked up to the June 26 situation.
Until the court makes a governing on the recovered money, it'll remain classified as evidence and it could be up to three years before it gets sent back to its owner.
The retired brewery employee had withdrawn the money from a finance establishment one or two days earlier as he was worried about the financial crisis.
A couple of days after the alleged theft, the person -- who attends Mass daily -- was due to fly to Medjugorje on pilgrimage.
The OAP required hospital treatment for shock and was left fearful over how he would manage without his savings, according to neighbours.
Now , however , both gardai and community welfare groups have been amazed by the reply to the pensioner's predicament -- with offers of money, weekend holidays and special home security installations being received.
Hearts
Chairman of the Cork Safety Forum, Tom Coleman, said the story had touched hearts countrywide.
"I think everybody was very upset by this poor man's story," he said. "I was chatting to him this A. M. and he's still extraordinarily distressed about all of it. But there are lots of very good, decent folks out there and they all wish to do something for this man," he claimed.
Mr Coleman will act as a liaison for the hundreds of people who have contacted the gardai and media outlets frantic to help the pensioner.
Offers of help have ranged from donations of 100 to weekend hotel breaks to allow him to get over his trial.
One lady who made contact with the Irish Independent -- but stayed unnamed -- said she was awfully upset by the man's tribulation.
"I just wish to make a tiny gift to help alleviate some of his stress. Just something to try to cheer him up," she claimed.
Supt Con Cadogan said gardai have been snowed under with people needing to help the pensioner.
Gurranabraher station has also been approached by garda groups who've offered to do fundraising activities to try to help him, writes tagza.com.
